Today is Shaheed Noor Hussain Day

Top News Desk: Today November 10 (Thursday) is Shaheed Noor Hussain Day. Today is an unforgettable day of the movement-struggle for the restoration of democracy in Bangladesh.

On this day, Noor Hossain was martyred in the anti-dictatorship movement of 1987. His self-sacrifice against the dictatorship of that time accelerated the movement of democratic people. On that day, Jubo League Nur Hossain came down to the streets with thousands of protesting youths as a living poster. On his chest and back was engraved a burning slogan ‘Soirachari nipat zak, Gonotontro mukti pak’ (Democracy should be freed, tyranny should die).

The fiery slogans of the youth, fearless in the struggle to establish a democracy of the then dictator, could not be tolerated. So the forces raised by the dictatorship fired indiscriminately and cracked his chest. On that day, Jubo League leader Nurul Huda Babul and Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur farm-labour leader Aminul Huda Titu were martyred. The anti-dictatorship movement gained momentum with the sacrifice of Nur Hossain and the struggle of the three alliances became irresistible.

In the tide of this movement, in the late nineties, the throne of dictatorship was washed away. The anti-dictatorship movement intensified with the blood donation of Shaheed Noor Hossain and the continued struggle led to the fall of the dictatorial government on December 6, 1990. After that, the long-cherished dream of democracy was established in the country. Shaheed Nur Hossain became a symbol of the democratic movement. Since then, November 10 has been celebrated as Shaheed Noor Hossain Day every year.
