Budget 168 crores to kill mosquitoes!

Top News Desk: In an attempt to combat the perennial issue of mosquito infestation in the capital city of Dhaka, the city corporations have once again increased their budget for mosquito control. However, despite substantial allocations, the organizations have struggled to bring the mosquito situation under control, particularly during the rainy season when Aedes mosquitoes become more prevalent. Over the past year, both city corporations have collectively spent about 100 crores on mosquito control measures.

For the current financial year, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have announced a combined budget of Tk 168.55 crores for mosquito control efforts. Of this budget, DNCC plans to allocate 121 crores 80 lakhs specifically for mosquito control. On the other hand, DSCC’s budget allocation for the same purpose is relatively lower, at Tk 31 crores 1 lakh.

Despite these significant budgetary allocations, citizens are voicing their discontent as they have not experienced any substantial reduction in mosquito populations. Many are questioning the effectiveness of DNCC and DSCC’s mosquito control strategies and accusing them of wasteful expenditure and possible embezzlement.

The persistent issue of mosquitoes and their resilience to control measures has led to a search for answers by authorities. Atiqul Islam, the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, is currently exploring the reasons behind the failure of mosquito control efforts. Conversely, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas claims success in mosquito eradication. This conflicting stance from the two mayors has raised eyebrows among urban planners and entomologists who interpret their statements as sending different messages.
