International Indigenous Peoples Day Celebrated Today

Top News Desk: August 9th (Wednesday) marks the observance of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples. Since 1994, this day has garnered global recognition under the auspices of the United Nations.

In South Asian nations, particularly in Bangladesh, there exists an ongoing discussion surrounding the term “indigenous.” This conversation stems from the inclusion of minority groups, communities, or tribes within the country’s constitution through the Fifteenth Amendment. Despite this constitutional mention, a number of these groups continue to assert their status as indigenous communities.

As outlined by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the constitution suggests using terms such as “small ethnic group” or “ethnic community” in lieu of the word ‘tribal’ during various television broadcasts.

In concurrence with this, the High Court has issued a directive to abstain from using the term “tribal.” Consequently, it’s noteworthy that these small ethnic groups will commemorate this day as World Indigenous Peoples Day.
