Remembering Shivram Chakraborty on His Death Anniversary Today

Top News Desk: Today, on August 28 (Monday), we commemorate the death anniversary of the accomplished novelist Shivram Chakraborty, who passed away on August 28, 1980. His life was marked by a unique blend of experiences, encompassing politics, grievances, imprisonment, and even nights spent on the sidewalks.

Shivram Chakraborty took his first breath on December 13, 1903, in North Calcutta. His father, Shivprasad Chakraborty, was known for his occasional quests in pursuit of ultimate enlightenment, a trait that Shivram inherited. This inclination led him to an incident during his teenage years when he fled from home—an event that he later penned in his work “Bari Theke Paliye” (Running Away from Home).

Initiating his literary journey through poetry, Shivram’s debut poem found its way into the pages of the Bharti newspaper. His first two published books were also poetry collections, released in 1929. Following these early poetic endeavors, he embarked on a prolific journey of writing articles, essays, plays, innumerable humorous stories, and memoirs.

By stepping into the realm of literature, Shivram Chakraborty caused ripples in the world of Bengali literary expression. Among his works, the novel that garnered the most attention was “Bari Theke Paliye.” Another enduring creation that he gifted to literature was the “Story of Harshvardhan Govardhan.” In a testament to his enduring impact, his novel “Bari Theke Paliye” was adapted into a film by the eminent director Ritwik Ghatak in 1958.
