Bangladesh celebrating the 75th Birthday of Sheikh Kamal

Top News Desk: Today, this Saturday (August 5), we commemorate the 75th birthday of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of the revered Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. A pivotal figure in the Liberation War, Sheikh Kamal was not only a passionate sports and cultural personality but also a multifaceted creative genius.

Born on August 5, 1949, in the quaint village of Tungipara in the Gopalganj subdivision, Sheikh Kamal’s life was tragically cut short at the tender age of 26 on the night of August 15, 1975, at the hands of a group of misguided army officers.

His talents knew no bounds. After completing his secondary education at Shaheen School and higher secondary education at Dhaka College, he pursued a BA Honors degree from the Social Science Department at Dhaka University. A skilled sitarist, he was associated with the ‘Chaynat’ sitar section. Moreover, Sheikh Kamal played a pivotal role in modernizing football in Bangladesh, being the founder of Abahani Krirachakra, an eminent sports club.

Beyond sports, he also left his mark on the world of arts and culture. As one of the founding members of Dhaka Theatre, he was renowned for his acting prowess in the theatre of Dhaka University. His passion for sports extended to various disciplines, including football, cricket, hockey, and basketball.

Sheikh Kamal’s commitment to the nation was further evident during the Liberation War. He received military training in the first war course of independent Bangladesh, joining the Mukti Bahini, and eventually becoming an officer under the guidance of General Osmani, the chief commander of the liberation war.

On this special occasion, President Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have both conveyed separate messages, acknowledging and honoring the lasting impact of Sheikh Kamal’s contributions to the nation.

Today, as we celebrate the 75th birthday of this remarkable individual, let us remember his indelible legacy and the profound influence he had on various aspects of our society, leaving an enduring mark in the hearts of the Bangladeshi people.
