Today is Ashura

Top News Desk: Today marks the observance of Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, which holds great significance in the Islamic calendar. Ashura, an Arabic word meaning the tenth day, is a day that has been revered and cherished throughout history due to its association with important events.

One of the most poignant and sorrowful events in Islamic history is remembered today—the martyrdom of Hazrat Hussain (RA), the son of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It took place in the desolate land of Karbala, near the banks of the Euphrates River in Kufa, during the year 62 Hijri. This tragic event has left an indelible mark on the hearts of people worldwide, making Ashura a day of profound remembrance and reflection.

Beyond this sorrowful event, Ashura holds various other religious and historical significance in the Islamic faith. It is believed that Allah created the world this very day and will also be destroyed on Ashura. Additionally, numerous significant events have occurred on this auspicious day throughout history.

For instance, on Ashura, Hazrat Adam, the first human being, was created by Allah. The flood during the time of Hazrat Noah came to an end, and his ark came to rest on Mount Judi in Turkey on this day. Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S.) was rescued from the fiery furnace of the tyrant King Nimrud on Ashura. Hazrat Yunus (A.S.) was freed from the belly of the fish on this day. Moreover, Hazrat Ayyub (A.S.) was cured of his incurable disease, and Allah drowned the oppressive Pharaoh and his army, saving Musa and his followers. On Ashura, Hazrat Sulaiman (A.S.) regained his lost kingdom, and Hazrat Yaqub (A.S.) was reunited with his missing son, Hazrat Yusuf (A.S.). Furthermore, it is believed that Hazrat Isa (A.S.) was born on this day and ascended to heaven from this world on Ashura.

For the global Muslim community, Ashura holds deep religious significance. It is a day of sacrifice and mourning, but also reverence and celebration. President Md Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages emphasizing the importance of Ashura on this occasion. As a mark of its significance, Saturday has been declared a public holiday in observance of this holy day.

On Ashura, Muslims come together to remember the historical events associated with this day and to offer prayers and supplications. The solemnity and reverence of this day serve as a reminder of the importance of faith, sacrifice, and compassion in the Islamic tradition.
