Renowned Poet Mohammad Rafiq Passes Away

Top News Desk: In a solemn announcement, it is with deep sorrow that we report the passing of Poet Mohammad Rafiq. On Sunday, August 6, the revered poet breathed his last while en route from Barisal to Dhaka in pursuit of advanced medical care. He was 80 years old at the time of his passing. The community mourns his loss with the profound phrase, “Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun.”

The confirmation of this heartrending news was conveyed by none other than Kabir’s cousin, Md. Shibli Hawladar.

Family sources revealed that the poet’s health suddenly deteriorated on Sunday morning during his stay in Chitoli, a village within Bagerhat. Subsequently, he was transported initially to Bagerhat and then to Barisal. At a private clinic in Barisal, medical professionals advised that he be taken to Dhaka after numerous tests diagnosed him with several physical complications, including cardiac issues. Tragically, he passed away en route as his family embarked on a journey to Dhaka later that evening, seeking more advanced treatment.

Poet Mohammad Rafiq leaves behind a legacy steeped in his contributions to the student movement and poetry during the 1960s, his unwavering dedication during the liberation war of 1971, and his active involvement in the anti-dictatorship movement in independent Bangladesh throughout the 1980s.

Born on October 23, 1943, in the quaint Baitpur village of Bemrata union, located within the Bagerhat Sadar upazila, Mohammad Rafiq was the eldest of eight siblings born to Samchuddin Ahmad and Reshatun Nahar. His formative years were spent in the embracing embrace of Bagerhat.
